Forty-seven post 16 Ilkley Grammar School students and five members of staff have recently returned from an Icelandic adventure.
As part of their A-level geography studies, the visit included Gulfoss, Geysir, Thingvellir, Seljalandsfoss waterfall (where students learned about isostatic and eustatic changes in sea level), Hellishiedi Geothermal Power Station and Skogar folk museum. The visit was an excellent opportunity for the geography students to see all the fantastic elements they have been studying in the classroom come to life.
Jonathan Beynon, head of geography, led the visit and thoroughly enjoyed his time, as did the students, in Iceland.
“The accommodation was beautiful and remote, including a stay at Farm Vatnsholt and the scenery was both beautiful and dramatic,” he said. “With the journey home being slightly delayed and a return flight in a plane named Surtsey (after the 1963 volcanic eruption!) our students (and staff) were happy to touch down with very fond memories of Iceland.”
