Schoolgirl Faye Rowntree has become a ‘multi word millionaire’ after taking part in an accelerated reader programme.

Faye, a Year Seven pupil at Guiseley School has read six million words since starting the scheme in September.

A spokeswoman for the scheme said: “To put this into context the whole Harry Potter book series has 1,084,625 words.

“Faye received a £10 book voucher, along with a certificate to celebrate this outstanding achievement.

“Reading has grown in popularity over the last three years; already this academic year, 7,000 book loans have been issued from the school library, a steady increase from the previous year’s figure of 6,000 and 4,000 in 2011-2012.”

As part of the programme students in Year 7 and Year 8 can win points by taking part in online quizzes after completing a book.

To encourage students further this term they will have the opportunity to enter a writing competition organised by Otley Lions.

The whole school also takes part in Story-in-a-Day where staff read a section from the same story in chronological order at the start of every lesson.

Students have to listen carefully throughout the day and are left on a cliff-hanger until the last lesson.
