For the second year running an Ilkley Grammar School student has won the Sporting Achievement award at a glittering celebration of local heroes.

Thirteen-year-old Emma Powell, who is in Year 9, is a climber and her recent success was recognised by the Local Hero Awards held at the Cedar Court Hotel in Harrogate.

Emma started climbing at the age of seven and within the last six months has ventured into the world of ice climbing. Recently competing in the 2014 World Youth Ice Climbing Championships at Champagny-en-Vanoise, France, Emma representing the GB team, came third. She is now ranked third in the world in the under 16s category, and continues to manage both her academic studies and achieve her very best in the world of climbing.

Emma said: “When I enter the competitions I get very nervous the night before, but I try and forget about what’s going to happen.

“Coming third in the World Youth Ice Climbing Competition was very hard, competing against people in different teams, from different countries, many with a better set up for ice climbing than at home.”

Mrs Gillian James, IGS head teacher, said: “Emma is a real credit to herself, her family and the school.

“To achieve such great success and be recognised within the wider community has only been possible through Emma’s sheer hard work and determination, and considerable talent.”
