As part of their First World War commemorations, the children at Westville House School, Ilkley, have been learning about all types of communications used during the Great War and comparing them to the more modern methods used by the army of today.
Having written to serving soldiers in Camp Bastion, Afghanistan, and produced a live radio broadcast for the troops the children have now put together shoe boxes full of goodies and treats for the soldiers.
A number of the children made the journey over to the Uniacke Barracks based in Harrogate, where they safely delivered more than 50 shoe boxes for despatch out to Camp Bastion.
Captain Brown, Community Liason Officer for the barracks, commended the children for their imagination over the World War One Communication project and told the children how delighted the soldiers would be to receive parcels from home – the same as men on the front during the First World War The final parts of the project will take place next term when the children will be using Skype and e-mail to communicate with the regiment in Afghanistan, and will culminate in a World War One day of celebration and remembrance.
