The two-wheeled efforts of an Otley school have earned it the ‘best in Leeds’ title in a national competition.
Children, staff and parents connected to Ashfield Primary were challenged to cycle to school every day for a fortnight as part of The Big Pedal.
The event was organised by Sustrans to encourage more people across the country to cycle – and Ashfield excelled after embracing it with enthusiasm.
Year four class teacher and PE co-ordinator Lucy Huddart said: “We are delighted to have achieved first place in Leeds, third place in Yorkshire, and 40th in the entire competition!”
This year’s The Big Pedal ran from March 3 to 14 and saw each school awarded points depending on how many pupils, staff and parents cycled – or scootered – to school each day. Sustrans is a UK charity dedicated to enabling more people to travel on foot or by bicycle or public transport during their daily journeys.
