Ilkley trekker sets out on African expedition

Christopher Stanfield from Ilkley is about to start a 2,000-mile charitable walk through Africa
A long-distance trekker has embarked on his latest charitable expedition – to walk 2,000 miles through Africa.
Ilkley’s Christopher Stanfield is on the road bound for Somaliland in a new fundraising venture in aid of the Edna Adan Maternity Hospital in Hargeisa.
Mr Stanfield set off from Cairo last month on a trek that will take him through vast barren desert and across both land and sea.
He is accompanied by a friend, who is filming the journey, and a camel (above) given to them by a local man, which he named Falcor, after the luck dragon charac-ter in film The Never-ending Story.
Mr Stanfield had previously recruited a donkey called Zidane to help in his previous fundraising journey in aid of the hospital – a walk across the Camino de Santiago in Southern France and Spain. Sadly, Zidane died before the walk began, but Mr Stanfield continued alone.
He hopes to collect £100,000 for the maternity hospital on his current trek, as well as raise awareness of the cause.
