Otley Folk Festival 'brings the streets alive'

The organisers of the 21st Otley Folk Festival have been praised for “bringing the streets alive” this year.

MP Greg Mulholland (Lib Dem, Leeds North West) was effusive in his praise for the annual event, which attracted thousands of music fans between Thursday and Sunday.

The 2012 festival enjoyed a strong line-up and fine weather, particularly on the Saturday, when visitors swarmed into the town to catch some of the shows.

Organiser Steve Fairholme said the whole event, sponsored by Black Sheep Brewery, was a big success.

He said: “It’s been really good. The fine weather really helped us and on Saturday a lot of people came along.

“We haven't got the numbers yet but most of the concerts were full and we received no complaints, which is always a great sign.

“We’ve also probably had more people staying out on the campsite at Knotford Nook than ever before.

“The whole festival was great and it’s hard to pick out any artist in particular as they were all good, but everybody liked and was talking about the Kris Drever Trio, and Les Barker was brilliant – but then he always is.”

About 80 acts, including bands, solo artists and dancers, performed at 12 venues, including Otley Courthouse, the cricket and rugby clubs, the Methodist Church Hall and several pubs.

The performers included award winning singer-songwriter Lucy Ward, Kathryn Roberts and Sean Lakeman, the Phil Langran Band and Belshazzar's Feast.

Mr Mulholland said: “The festival was another huge success, with a great and varied line-up, creating a great atmosphere in the venues, streets and pubs across the town.

“The weather on Saturday was fantastic for the dancers and the other outdoor performers who brought the streets alive. A huge thank you must go to Steve and the amazing team of volunteers who work so hard to deliver the festival which is hugely important to the town.”
