Pupils and staff at a Horsforth school are celebrating winning a Leeds-wide recycling challenge.
Horsforth Newlaithes Primary School came out top in a competition to see which of 17 schools could best fill their newly-fitted waste banks for old electronic equipment.
The Horsforth school, which recycled 92 items between July and the end of term, has received a £100 cheque from Weeelink, the Leeds City Council partner company that collects the old electrical goods.
The money was presented by the council’s executive member for the environment, Councillor Mark Dobson, and Weeelink director Edward Cooke.
Coun Dobson said: “Well done to all the schools who participated, and congratulations to Horsforth Newlaithes and runners-up Whitecote primary schools on their fantastic achievements.
“This effort is inspiring in many ways and we hope the children and their families will continue to lead our city in becoming cleaner and greener, encouraging others to recycle and consider the long-term environmental consequences of their actions.”
Horsforth Newlaithes’ headteacher Joanne Blacoe said: “I am delighted with the efforts of staff, pupils and parents, and we are all proud of how much has been recycled in such a short space of time.
“This is a brilliant opportunity for us to talk about recycling and the environment. The great thing about the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment banks is that we’re able to get parents and carers involved, too.”
Further incentives are now being offered to ensure all the participating schools keep up their efforts.
