Sun-blessed Norwood Show has Olympics class theme

The Olympics played a starring role in a sun-blessed 2012 Norwood Show.

As the Paralympics approached their end in London on Saturday, Norwood residents enjoyed their very own races – along with a multitude of Olympics-inspired handicraft and produce class entries.

Bradley Wiggins and other Team GB medal winners were the inspiration for local children competing to win categories like Vegetable Sports Person and Olympic Hama Bead Creation.

Younger residents also played a starring role in the first event of the afternoon, the pet show, where they were quizzed about their animals and their care.

Winners of the dog section, for the second year running, were Matthew Whiteley with Tigger. Second place went to Rufus Sanders with his dog, Jet, with Charlotte Richardson in third position with her dog, Molly.

Winners of the small animal section were Peter Bradbury in first place with his rabbit, Pip, and Samuel Clarke in second with his guinea pig, Franklin, while Serena and Imogen Patrick won the judge’s discretionary award for their hearing dog puppy, Larry.

Handicraft judging took place while the pet show and sports races were underway, and saw Sam Barker win Best Miniature Garden, reclaiming the Fred Hathaway Rosebowl, and Serena Patrick winning the Atkinson Family Trophy for the best Vegetable Sports Person.

Connor Pullan and Imogen Patrick jointly won the Shirley Lancaster Trophy for the most points in the children’s baking classes, while four-year-old Samuel Scaife won the five and under handwriting prize, Sam Nickson won the Francis and Shirley Dawson Trophy for the best handwriting for ages six and seven, and Anna Spence won the Alan Stobbs Trophy for the best handwriting aged eight and over.

Show committee member, Sarah-Jane Dawson, said: “With entries ranging from a replica Olympic torch to baked and decorated Olympic rings, the standard of exhibits was extremely high.

“Eleven-year-old Imogen Patrick won the Mid Washburn Valley Millennium Cup for the highest points earned in the arts and handicraft classes by a child of ten and above, with Connor Pullan placed second.

“Imogen’s sister, eight-year-old Serena Patrick, won the Silver Show trophy for the most points earned by a child of nine and under for the second consecutive year, with Jayne Ellis in second place. Ruth Brown won the Dawson-Patrick Trophy for the most points in the adults’ classes.

“The show-goers enjoyed the late afternoon sunshine with a game of rounders and a barbecue, a fabulous finish to both Norwood Show and the 2012 Olympics.”

Commemorative books for all the trophy winners were once again donated by the Norwood Charities Commission, while the sports were sponsored by Richard Gill & Sons.
