An awards evening – modelled on the Hollywood Oscars ceremony – has been held to honour local theatre group productions and performers.

The Wharfedale Festival of Theatre’s 2011-2012 Awards Evening was staged at St Mary’s School in Menston, where 170 adults and children gathered to hear who had won the many accolades on offer.

The 2011-2012 Festival was described as a big success, attracting 27 entries – ten for drama (adults), seven for youth and schools, three for musicals (adults) and seven for the relatively new competition of pantomimes (adults).

A festival spokesman said: “Rising production costs led to entries for musicals (adults) falling to three this year, but there was certainly no falling-off in the quality of the entries, only one-third of a mark dividing the winner from the runners-up.

“Yeadon Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society took the honours with their sparkling production of Sweet Charity, with Ripon Amateur Operatic Society’s production of Billy and Ilkley Amateur Operatic Society’s performance of Oliver! in joint second place.

“Youth and schools entries also rose, and the quality of productions continues to be a considerable source of pride to everyone involved in the amateur theatre locally.”

The Spirit of Theatre award went to popular local actress, gifted director and long-serving Otley Little Theatre secretary Marjorie Inman.

Entries for the 2012-2013 Wharfedale Festival of Theatre will open on Wednesday. Details and the entry form can be downloaded now from the www.wharfedaletheatrefest.org.uk festival website.
