Margaret Parkin catches up on the latest news from the Wharfedale and Aireborough Observer by Lake Como Margaret Parkin catches up on the latest news from the Wharfedale and Aireborough Observer by Lake Como

Wharfedale & Aireborough Observer readers are a dedicated bunch – as this photo of Margaret Parkin enjoying her favourite weekly read by the banks of Italy’s Lake Como proves.

While holidaying beside one of Europe’s most beautiful backdrops, Mrs Parkin, a church warden at All Saints Parish Church in Otley, was determined not to miss out on her ‘local’ news.

So she arranged for a copy of the Observer – which she can be seen enjoying here in the sun – to be posted to the small village of Griante, near Lake Como – some 731 miles from Otley as the crow flies.

Mrs Parkin’s husband John, meanwhile, who is associate priest at All Saints, was at the haven for the international jet-set in his capacity as chaplain to the Church of the Ascencion, an Anglican place of worship right on the lakeside.

And this fantastic photo got us thinking. Let’s have a bit of photographic fun this summer, with the chance to win a prize.

Editor Malcolm Hoddy explained: “I challenge readers of both the Observer and the Ilkley Gazette to send me a photograph of either newspaper being read on holiday or on a trip at home or abroad.

“In the past, I have had pictures of newspapers being read in a variety of places, including one of a diver in the Red Sea, as well as in perilously perched tents and a folded paper even being worn as a bikini.”

The more interesting the setting for your photograph the better, with the editor selecting his favourite in early autumn.

Send images to the editor at his malcolm.hoddy@gazetteandobserver.co.uk e-mail address.
