Designs on prize for best gadget and gizmo ideas

Teenagers in Horsforth and Aireborough are being invited to enter a competition to see their manufacturing ideas brought to life.

The area’s MP, Stuart Andrew, has joined forces with UK manufacturers to encourage local youngsters to take part in the We Made It! competition. Young people aged 13-16 are invited to submit designs and ideas for a gadget, gizmo, toy or tool they’d like to see made. Entries in Mr Andrew’s constituency will be judged by him, and the winner will be entered into a nationwide competition assessed by manufacturing organisations, including Boeing, The Manufacturing Institute, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Finmeccanica, Renewable UK, the Confederation of Paper Industries and Lloyds Banking Group. The best entries nationwide will be invited to a Fab Lab, where their designs will be manufactured and brought to life.

The MP will take the winner of the local competition to a reception and awards ceremony in Parliament later this year, and they will have the opportunity to meet the heads of the organisations involved in the project.

Mr Andrew said: “I’m very proud to be supporting this great project to help young people turn their ideas into reality. Britain desperately needs more young people aspiring to high-level manufacturing jobs to gain a better understanding of how the industry and businesses involved in it actually works.”
