Teams wanted to mark the passing of the torch
7:20am Friday 8th June 2012 in News
Aspiring Wharfedale sports-men and women of all ages are being challenged to follow in the footsteps of top Olympians on the day the Olympic torch passes through the valley.
Local sports alliance Wharfedale Activity Group (WAG) is inviting teams to battle it out in an Olympic-themed sports event on Sunday June 24.
Teams of six – which must be of both mixed age and genders – will compete in eight fun challenges named after sporting heroes.
They include the Jonathon Edwards Leap, the Kelly Holmes Run, the Steve Backley Soft Javelin Throw, the Stephen Miller Throw, the Jessica Ennis Mini Hurdles, the Steve Redgrave Row, the Chris Hoy Cycle, and the Holly Bleasedale Jump.
The event, at Ghyll Royd School, Burley-in-Wharfe-dale will coincide with the day of the Olympic torch’s journey through the valley.
Competitions take place from 2pm to 5pm and the event will culminate in participants and spectators being able to view the Olympic torch passing the school at approximately 4.45pm.
Gold, silver and bronze medals will be presented to winning teams.
“We are looking for four teams to represent each area, a team could be a family, community group, sports club or school,” said WAG sports development worker, James Heddon.
“Teams are invited from Ilkley, Addingham, Menston and Burley-in-Wharfedale and each team of six must include males and females, a minimum of two members aged 8-16 and two over 40.”
Teams will be accepted on a first-come-first-served basis.
WAG recently co-ordinated a week of sports and physical activities aimed at the over 50s, part of its drive to encourage participation in the Ilkley area, as well as raising the profile of sports groups.
It has also been working with local sports clubs and activities providers in the valley to help them work together, and produced a directory of sports and activity providers in Wharfedale.
