Leeds United legend Eddie Gray went back to school this week to present a special award to a young sportsman.
The Glasgow-born former Leeds Utd winger, manager and coach became the latest big sporting name to present the Jamie Payne Ross Award at St Mary’s Catholic High School, Menston, on Wednesday.
The award is given annually at the school is memory of Jamie, who died in a tragic accident in December 1993. It is presented for outstanding achievement in sport for a Year 8 boy.
The award was given to the school by Jamie’s mother, Colleen, and elder brother, Adam.
This year’s worthy winner was James Bowling, who last year came fourth in the Taekwando World Championships in Canada.
Previous stars who have presented the award include Sir Trevor Brooking, Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson and the Kaiser Chiefs.
Assistant headteacher, David Geldart, said: “Eddie is a good friend of the school and did not hesitate to accept the invitation to present the award. Eddie remains an outstanding role model in sport and is always very modest about his own remarkable achievements in football.
“It was certainly an honour for St Mary’s to have him present this award.”
Year 8 student, Katie Connor, gave a performance on the piano at the ceremony.
