Clothing fit for the final frontier was on the curriculum when pupils took part in a spacesuit workshop.
Year Five pupils from Rawdon St Peter’s Church of England Primary School joined junior pupils from the Grammar School at Leeds for National Science and Engineering Week.
As part of the ‘Our world in motion’ event at the Grammar School, youngsters learned how to create utility clothing that is out of this world.
The children learnt that spacesuits must cope with temperature, be resistant to meteorites, and absorbent.
Clare Oddy, Year Five class teacher at Rawdon St Peter’s, said: “From the minute we arrived the children integrated and started working in teams made up of pupils from both schools.
“They are getting a lot out of the day’s activities – teamwork, how to plan an experiment, learn the science behind it and get reliable results. The pupils have taken the lead in all the activities.”
Science leader Gwen Lindsey, who coordinated the activities, said: “The week has been all about investigative science and communicating scientific principles to make them accessible for children and the general public.
“Our activities in school have encouraged the children to work in teams.”
