A family-run furniture shop which was “stuck in the past” was transformed after a team was sent in by a TV makeover show.

John Butler and his family, who have run Kettley’s Furniture in Ivegate, Yeadon, for 33 years, were sought out by producers of BBC Two’s Alex Polizzi – The Fixer to take part in the show. They were filmed for 100 hours between October and December last year and the footage was condensed into an hour-long show broadcast this week.

Mr Butler’s nephew Andrew Collop said the store had been in need of a revamp.

“We were stuck in the past, the carpet was 20 years old,” he said. “We very rarely changed the windows round, we did need a kick up the backside to regenerate the shop and start putting a bit of life back into it.”

He said the family had been apprehensive after seeing other episodes of the programme in which they felt businesses had been shown to be “failing”.

He said this was not the case with Kettley’s, which he said was coping well against pressures of the recession.

“Figures have slightly dropped due to the economic climate but we are still doing really well despite that,” he said.

He said he thought the programme might have contributed to the boost in business but he believed a spell of bad weather in January 2011 had had a negative effect on the store.

The Fixer brought in a design engineer to breathe new life into the shop and changed the decor and signage. Mr Collop said: “I think it certainly looks better than it did, so it is a definite improvement.

“At the end of the day it’s still got to bring customers through the door, so it’s yet to prove its point after it’s been on TV.”
