Parents will have a chance to say what they think about an Otley school’s proposals to become an Academy at a consultation meeting.

Prince Henry’s Grammar School confirmed in May that governors had narrowly voted – at the third time of asking – to push ahead with the change, despite opposition from staff.

Acquiring Academy status would take the school out of local authority control, effectively creating a publicly-funded indep-endent school – something head-teacher Janet Sheriff believes could have both educational and financial advantages.

But the Leeds branch of the National Union of Teachers have opposed the proposal and its wisdom has also been challenged by town and ward councillors, who labelled it an unnecessary “distraction” for an already successful school.

Now parents, carers and members of the school community can have their say when the school holds an “interim consultation” on Monday, July 11.

Mrs Sheriff said: “From the information gathered so far it seems Academy status could help to maintain all that is good about Prince Henry’s and also provide opportunities for us to progress in our ambition to improve our educational provision.

“The school’s name, uniform, ethos and values would not change. The additional finance and flexibility gained would help us build on our strengths and move closer to achieving our vision of a ‘successful, world class, learning community’. However, it is important to note that a final decision has not been made. Governors want to find out as much as possible about the pros and cons and consult with parents, carers, school staff and the school community.

“The aim is to make a decision most likely to secure the best provision for Prince Henry’s students – both now and in the future.”

The evening will be led by the chairman of governors, Paul Tranter. Anyone wishing to attend should send an e-mail to Academyconsultation@prince henrys.co.uk or call (01943) 463524. Further details about the proposal can be viewed at prince henrys.co.uk. A consultation event will also be held during the autumn term.
