Historic Guiseley will come under the spotlight in an organised walk around the town.

The event, on Saturday, June 25, has been organised by Aireborough Civic Society as part of Civic Societies Week and to celebrate the new Conservation Area changes.

The walk, which will last about three hours, is aimed at residents and anyone interested in the town, and will highlight interesting local buildings and the history of the area.

The civic society said: “Guiseley is a very attractive town because of the variety of buildings, open spaces and views in the area.

“It is all too easy to take all this for granted. Leeds City Council Conservation Department has worked extremely hard over the past two years to produce the new Guiseley Conservation Area Appraisal.

“Aireborough Civic Society has been on two walks with the officer concerned looking at what parts of the town should have Conservation Area protection.”

The walk will visit the ancient Guiseley Wells, where the original settlement is thought to have started. There will also be a tour of Guiseley Church, which dates from about 1150 AD.

On show will be medieval fields, the old village centre, the village stocks and pump, the Victorian centre, some of the few remaining Industrial mills and attractive Victorian housing.

Numbers for the civic society walk, which starts at 2pm, are limited and booking is essential. For further information phone 0113-2503580 or e-mail clivewoods@hotmail.com
