Everything from fighter planes to ferrets will feature in this weekend’s Otley Show.

The Battle of Britain Experience’s display Spitfire looks set to be one of the highlights of the 202nd show, which is the oldest one-day agricultural event in the country.

Other attractions on Saturday will include birds of prey, ferret, fly fishing and gun dog exhibitions, a sheep show – including dancing sheep – and a new music marquee.

This year will also see more than 4,000 entries, spanning livestock, dog, produce, handicraft and farrier classes, on display at the Bridge End showground.

Wharfedale Agricultural Society’s new chairman Jeff Crabtree, who has succeeded Nicholas Houseman in the post, is hoping for a repeat of 2010’s record-breaking crowds and temperatures. He said: “I’m really looking forward to this year’s show. Everything’s moving very busily along and everyone’s been working really hard to get everything ready.

“We’ve all been glued to the weather forecasts because it’s not been too good recently but I think it’s all meant to come right by the weekend, so we should have a terrific weekend of sunshine – I’ll certainly be praying for that.

“If we can repeat the weather and the crowds we got last year then we’ll have cracked it!

“We have had a lot of entries coming in and we’ll have a lot of stands and displays from the agricultural community once again.

“We’ve also got some exciting new things this year, including a display Spitfire which I’m sure a lot of people will be looking forward to seeing, and which ties in with the fundraising by Help for Heroes which will be going on during the day.

“And we’ll have a new music marquee beside the main arena, so we’ll have music throughout the show. It’s all about trying to get more people from different walks of life interested in it.”

Yorkshire Volunteers Band will also be performing on the day, while equestrian enthusiasts should enjoy the Pony Club Mounted Games of GB, which will feature some competition on very fast ponies.

MP Greg Mulholland (Lib Dem, Leeds North West) will be judging the trade stands. He said: “This is the first time I have been asked to be a judge and I hope the trade stalls will be pulling out all the stops, as usual, for the 202nd Otley Show.”
