A volunteer who helps people affected by crime has received a national award.

Helen Harding, of Horsforth, works for Victim Support, which offers help to people who want to move forward in their lives after suffering as a result of crime.

She received an award from the charity’s president, the Princess Royal, Princess Anne, along with 19 other volunteers from England and Wales at a special ceremony at the British Museum.

The third annual awards ceremony, compered by radio and television presenter Nicky Campbell, recognised people helping victims of crime.

“The awards are a great way of recognising the efforts of our volunteers,” said Karen Froggatt, Victim Support’s interim regional manager for Yorkshire and the Humber.

“Helen’s commitment to volunteering has been outstanding.

“She has made a huge difference locally and thoroughly deserves this award.”

Sarah Phillips, chairman of Victim Support, said: “We appreciate every single person who dedicates their time to helping those who really need support to cope in the aftermath of crime.

“The volunteers who have received awards are just a few of the thousands of volunteers who help people affected by crime to find the strength to move on with their lives.

“They all do an amazing job and without them we wouldn’t be able to give the same level of service.”

Victim Support is currently seeking to recruit and train 450 new volunteers for a new service to specifically help and support people bereaved by homicide and road death.
