Organisers are hoping sunny weather, cute ferrets and some slighty scary Morris dancers will make this weekend’s Pool Feast a bumper success.

Around 1,000 people turned out in bright sunshine to support last year’s feast, when they were treated to a crime-busting display by West Yorkshire Police dogs as well as the usual array of races, stalls and games.

On Sunday the Medusa Gothic Morris Team – who dress all in black and dance to strictly minor key tunes – and ferret bingo are set to be among the highlights of the annual community fundraiser. The ferrets are in a box with ferret-sized, numbered tunnels and bets are placed on which tunnels they will emerge from.

Feast chairman and co-ordinator Patrick Mortimer is also hoping for a repeat of 2008’s blue skies.

He said: “We’re ready and things are looking good, the weather’s meant to stay sunny but be slightly cooler, which would be perfect.

“The police dogs were a big hit last year so this time we’ve got the Tailwaggers dog training club coming to put on a display as our main arena event.

“The ferret bingo is always popular and I think it’s still quite unusual, so people are aways interested. Things like the human fruit machine, which we’ll have again, were quite rare when we started it a few years ago but are now more common.

“But not many places can boast of having ferret bingo! The Medusa Gothic Morris Team should also give us something a bit different.

“They’re an all female team who dress in black, from the Knaresborough area, and they’re just a bit different. We’ve also got majorettes coming so that should provide a nice bit of contrast!”

Other attractions this year will include a children’s Olympics, a karate exhibition, an assault course and a visit by a fire fighting crew.

The feast, which raises money for causes in the village, will run from 2pm to 5pm on the recreation ground off Arthington Lane.
