Vernon wins Ilkley Trail Race

Ilkley Harriers introduced a new Trail Race to the calendar this Bank Holiday weekend. A 6.9 mile mixed terrain race had a bit of everything for the 226 finishers, most notably some superb views over the Wharfe Valley from Middleton Moor.

The race was won by GB international Steve Vernon (Stockport Harriers) in a fast time of 40.26.

Vernon came to Ilkley to use the race as preparation for the European Mountain Running Championships in July. He has pledged to return next year to defend his title.

Karen Pickles (Spen AC) was first lady in 50.09 followed home by a trio of Ilkley ladies in Amanda Oddie in 51.16, Sally Malir in 52.04 and Alison Bennett in 52.49. They took the ladies' team prize.

Ilkley Harriers also took the men's team prize for the top four finishers in Jamie Hutchinson, Stuart Pitches, Dave Cummings and Steve Coy.

Otley Athletic Club Thirtyeight Otley Athletic Club members participated in the second Harrogate and District Summer Race League fixture held last Thursday by Nidd Valley Runners around a mainly off-road route at Starbeck.

The course was just short of 10km and with the fine weather in the evening a most enjoyable night was had by all members of the league's affiliated clubs.

On Sunday morning at Ilkley Harriers' inaugural Ilkley Trail Race of 6.9 miles Otley AC second claim member Tim Midgley finished second (42.36) followed by Matt Cox in fourth (43.41), Andrew Robertshaw fifth (43.48), Zack Whitehead tenth (45.52), Malcolm Court 59th (54.25), Emma Payne (second claim) 164th (67.14), Beate Schmidt-Rohlfing 179th (70.18) and Antonio Cardinale 194th (72.43).

Also on Sunday morning, and just north of Ripon at the Melmerby 10km won by Darran Bilton (Leeds) in 30.56, Otley's Howard Jeffrey finished 32nd (39.10), Tom Hannah 93rd (43.35) and David Fox 111th (45.05).

Club training is as usual tonight, Thursday, and next Tuesday commencing from Otley RUFC, Cross Green at 7.15pm and local adult runners of all standards are welcome to try the various routes and paces available.

Next Thursday, the third Harrogate League race takes place at Thirsk with Otley members meeting initially at Cross Green for 6pm.

The Otley Ten Mile Road Race, sponsored by The Divan Centre, Leeds and supported by Up & Running, takes place on Wednesday, June 11, starting at 7.30pm.

All finishers will receive a commemorative bottle of Hambleton Ale and entries will be taken on the night and more details are available from www.otleyac.co.uk Training for Otley Athletic Club Juniors for 8-13 year-olds continues to grow in popularity and sessions take place at Otley RUFC's training pitches behind Stephen Smith's Garden Centre on Pool Road commencing at 6.30pm on Wednesdays.
