Menston actor Sam Riley picked up another award last night when he was voted Best Newcomer in the Sony Ericsson Empire Movie Awards.

Sam, 28, has scooped a string of awards since starring as rock-star Ian Curtis, in the Joy Division biopic 'Control'.

Sam, whose parents Andrew, 54, a textile agent, and Amanda, 51, a nursery teacher, still live in Menston, was catapulted into fame last October following the release of the award winning film - which was his first major role.

He played post-punk icon Curtis - lead singer of Joy Division, who committed suicide in the early 80s at the age of 23.

Sam's father said: "We are obviously very proud of Sam and really pleased that he has done so well.

"He is just getting on with it as usual and still finds it all very hard to believe."

Sam, who was a former pupil of Menston Infants school, was offered the lead after being spotted by award winning director and photographer Anton Corbijn.

He had previously appeared in small television parts and had a minor role in another music related movie - 24 Hour People.

A relative newcomer to the movie scene, he was nominated for his latest accolade alongside movie legends - director David Yates - for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and Empire Icon, Ewan MacGregor.

He was named as Rising Star of the Year in the Richard Attenborough Film Awards and Breakthrough Actor at the London Film Cricits' Circle in February. He also scooped Most Promising Newcomer at the British Independent Film Awards (BIFAS) held in London last November.
