THE fifth annual summer solstice swim at Ilkley Lido took place on Thursday, June 21.

Swimmers from all over the country arrived at the lido on Denton Road to swim from 4.30am taking in the stunning surroundings of the jewel in Ilkley’s crown.

Davy Simpson, chairman of the Friends of Ilkley Lido (FOIL) said: “Two hundred and seventy-six swimmers came in from 4.30am for our fifth annual solstice swim. It was the biggest attendance to date.

“The weather and the sun rise was the best we’ve had.”

He added: “Many thanks to Bradford Council and the lido staff for supporting the event and getting up early to make this happen.”

Commenting on Facebook swimmer Helen Jubb said: “Loved it. Such a fantastic atmosphere. Freezing.”

Adele Hirst added: “Cold but invigorating.”

Founded in 2008, FOIL is run for and by those who love the Lido and want to support, protect and improve the fantastic facility.

The Lido, which was built in 1935, was voted in the top ten open-air pools in the country by The Guardian.

The Bradford Council run venue has wonderful far-ranging views across Ilkley Moor and is situated only two minutes from Ilkley town centre. It has a 20-metre stretch of swallow water that children can splash in while adult swimmers can spend their time peacefully completing a few lengths at the other end of the lagoon-shaped pool.

Each year the venue attracts more than 140,000 people.
