ONE OF Britain’s oldest poppy sellers has died at the age of 103.
Ernest Carr, from Guiseley, died peacefully on Monday at the British legion home in Ripon.
Mr Carr, a veteran of the Second World War, was still selling poppies past his 100th birthday - manning the Royal British Legion stall each year at Yeadon Morrisons. At the age of 101 he laid a wreath at St Oswald’s Church during the annual remembrance service.
Mr Carr was in reconnaissance during the Second World War, going into Belgium, France, Holland and Germany. He narrowly escaped death when he was stood between two friends who were hit by a German shell. The old soldier described himself as “lucky to be alive”.
Born in Horsforth in 1914, Ernest has lived most of his life in Yeadon, and was a loyal volunteer for the Royal British Legion for more than 20 years.
