COUNCILLOR Martin Smith (Con, Ilkley) has been installed as Deputy Lord Mayor of Bradford for the civic year 2018-19.

Cllr Mike Ellis, Chief whip of the Conservative Group made a speech to welcome Cllr Smith to the role. He said: "Brian Martin Smith, known to us as Martin, has been a City of Bradford District Councillor for over 31 Years.

"In his time on Council he has undertaken many roles, for example serving as Portfolio Holder for Housing and for Social Services.

"He chaired Incommunities for 13 years, is a trustee of Nell Bank and the Ilkley Youth and Children's Association.

"Martin is a very good "no nonsense" local politician, who gets jobs done. Despite being a keen fan of miniature railways, once committed he is very hard to de-rail.

"Matin is also a very keen gardener and armature photographer, a skill he uses on his much loved holidays. He is a keen Rotarian and believes in helping others . Above all Ilkley matters greatly to him!

"Martin is married to Katie, who will be a great support in his role. They have one son, James, whom they proudly saw married last year. In conclusion, may I warmly propose Martin Smith to you, as Deputy Lord Mayor for the Civic Year 2018 - 19."

Cllr Smith said: "Katie and I are grateful for the election to the position Deputy Lord Mayor of Bradford and we look forward to meeting many residents of Ilkley and residents from across Bradford over the year.

"We support the Lord Mayor's charities of Sue Ryder Moorlands and Bradford Night Stop and look forward to a year's hard but rewarding work supporting the many and varied community organisations in our vibrant, active area."
