YOUNG cyclists from Otley have excelled in the regional and national levels of a major championship.

Members of Otley Cycle Club took part in the British Schools Cycling Association Roller Racing Championships in Farsley on Saturday, March 17.

The indoor event sees competitors pedalling on fixed rollers over 500 metre and 1000 metre distances.

The riders from Otley, also representing several of the town's schools, enjoyed considerable individual and team success.

The final National results saw Daniel Middlebrooke of Otley All Saints C of E Primary School named the U9 Boys Champion.

Isobel Wilks, meanwhile, of Prince Henry's Grammar School was crowned the U13 Girls Champion.

There was also success in the National and Regional Team Champions category. The U9 Girls section was won by Isla Aylward and Amy Hodgkins, for Otley All Saints, while the U13 Girls champions were Poppy Peacock, Isobel Wilks and Emily Middlebrooke, for Prince Henry's.

Otley Cycle Club's Press Secretary, Jill Birch, said: "A further six podium spots were also taken up by Otley riders.

"In the Regional competition Otley schools appeared throughout the winners, with some podiums being made up exclusively of riders from the town.

"And Isla Aylward, Daniel Middlebrooke, Alex Hodgkins and Isobel Wilks were all Gold medal Regional champions.

"This was a fantastic effort and testament to the town’s cycling prowess."
