THE CHEVIN Cross has gone up above Otley for a 50th time.

Volunteers braved icy temperatures and snow to raise the 36ft high wooden monument on Surprise View on Saturday, March 17.

The brainchild of the Otley Council of Christian Churches, the cross was first installed as part of the Easter celebrations in 1968.

Its 50th anniversary has been marked by Otley Churches Together producing a special commemorative booklet, The Chevin Cross - Otley, 1968-2018.

Written by John Burland, Howard Chaplin and Ron Sweeney, the publication costs £5 and will be on sale at Otley's churches over Easter.

Further events organised to mark the cross's 50th year will include a gathering at Otley Methodist Church on Good Friday, March 30.

That will be followed by a walk to Surprise View for a short, 2pm service.

A sunrise service will also be held at the foot of the cross at 7am on Easter Sunday, April 1.
