AN ACADEMIC has told an Otley audience there is 'still much to do' in achieving equality for women in sport.

Sheila Scraton, Professor Emerita at Leeds Beckett University, discussed the issue at an International Women's Day bring and share lunch held at Otley Labour Rooms on Thursday, March 8.

Prof Scraton is the author of Shaping up to Womanhood and her work over the past 40 years has focused on gender equality in sport, and how to get more girls and women involved.

She told the lunch, organised by Otley Women Together, that: "Things are changing but media coverage, sponsorship, professional pay and sporting culture are still heavily biased to male sport, with men still holding the power."

She also said PE at school could transform girls' attitudes towards physical fitness if it focused less on assessment and competition and more on learning about their bodies, friendship and having fun.
