A GROUP of volunteers in Otley have been crowned 'best in the country' by the PDSA.

The veterinary charity has awarded its Retail Team of the Year award to those running its fundraising shop on Kirkgate.

The 20-strong team beat off competition from about 125 other PDSA store volunteer groups to scoop the top prize.

They were presented with their trophy by PDSA’s Internal Communications and Engagement Manager, Caroline Talbot, this week.

She said: "Volunteers are the lifeblood of PDSA and here in Otley the volunteers’ commitment and dedication to the charity is nothing short of inspiring.

"Every year they raise funds to help PDSA’s vet and nurses provide vital veterinary treatment to treat sick and injured pets of people in need.

"We are extremely fortunate and grateful for their support."

Otley PDSA shop Manager Jayne Harrison added: "The volunteers here give their time generously to raise funds for PDSA, so I’m thrilled that their hard work has been recognised by the charity.

"They are a magnificent team, who work so well together.

"Our volunteers are always looking for opportunities to boost sales, identifying the gems being donated to the shop.

"This shop would not be anywhere near as successful without these wonderful people who give up their time to help others."

Together,

The Otley team volunteers for about 170 hours every week and includes teenagers and octogenarians.

Their work includes sorting donations, serving customers and creating eye-catching displays.
