OTLEY'S annual Zombie Apocalypse has shuffled off this year's calendar.

The scary event, which has raised thousands for local charities*, has been drawing teams of 'survivors' and the living dead to the town since 2013.

The Apocalypse game sees the human teams try to make their way to designated safe zones around Otley, while pursued by 'the infected'.

This week, however, one of the event's organisers, Mel Metcalfe, announced that they would be taking a break in 2018 - though they fully intend to bring the monstrous attraction back to life next year.

She said: "We have some news and we are sorry if this disappoints anyone, but the crew at OZA are taking a year off from event organising.

"All the organisers over the years have done a fantastic job and it's been a wonderful experience being part of such a devoted team and having such amazing support from you all.

"But it is hard work and takes up a lot of time and effort organising and running and fundraising for such a big event.

"We all have families, jobs, and lives that also need our attention and just for now it would be wonderful to not have to worry about sorting locations, insurance, risk assessments, make up, fundraising, tickets, and so on."

Mel added: "Please note this is in no way the end of OZA, this is a short break and we will be back for the reunion next year and will be fierce.

"We still love all things zombie and of course we will always love you, our OZA supporters.

"If anyone wants to get on the organising team with myself and Donna and Cheryl for next year give us a shout, the more the merrier."
