A VICTIM of the Manchester terror attack will be remembered in a town's Christmas celebrations this weekend with a light in the shape of her favourite flower.

The stargazer lily light will be officially unveiled in Guiseley and will be followed by fireworks in memory of Wendy Fawell, who was one of 22 people killed in the Arena bombing.

The 50-year-old mother of two, from Otley, was originally from Guiseley and had previously worked at St Oswald's School.

A special tribute will be paid to her when Guiseley's lights are switched on this Sunday.

A spokeswoman said: "The event will have a certain poignancy this year, as a special light has been made in memory of Wendy Fawell who sadly lost her life in the Manchester bombings earlier in the year. Wendy’s favourite flower was the stargazer lily, and as a remembrance to Wendy from her children Adam and Charlotte, a special light has been made and will be placed permanently outside the Red Lion pub."

Guiseley's MP Stuart Andrew, who is one of the event's organiser's, said: "The awful terrorist attack in Manchester was made even more horrific with the news that Wendy was a victim. She was clearly loved by so many local people and knowing her son, Adam, personally it's been amazing to see how he and her daughter Charlotte have been so brave coming to terms with their loss. The new light in the shape of Wendy's favourite flower and the fireworks in her memory will, I hope, be of some comfort to them that our town are proud to remember her."

Mrs Fawell was the subject of a huge appeal on social media after she was last seen in the foyer of the arena shortly before the bomb blast. More than 100 people gathered in Otley for a candlelit vigil to pray for her safe return, but family and friends took to Facebook to share the sad news when it was later confirmed that she had died.

Floral tributes were placed in Otley's Market Square in her memory and a book of condolence was opened in the town.

Her memory will be honoured at Guiseley's second Christmas market and lights switch on at 6pm on Sunday, November 26.

Emmerdale actors James Hooton (Sam Dingle) and Karen Blick (Lydia Hart) will switch on the lights at the event in Towngate.

The event, sponsored by Manning Stainton and Aireborough Decorating Centre, starts at 2pm and is being billed a fun-filled afternoon for all the family with stalls selling a range of items and gifts, a food court, funfair and a variety of acts and singers.

The event spokeswoman said: "As well as the stage entertainment, local community arts company Codswallop CIC will be taking over with an army of elves instigating Guiseley’s biggest Pom-pom (snowball) fight, flash mobs, street theatre and generally wreaking havoc. If you prefer something a bit quieter you can pop into the Codswallop Creation Station for scrap lantern making for all ages, to light up the market ready for the fireworks."

Mr Andrew and a group of volunteers have organised the event as part of an ongoing project to raise money to ensure Guiseley gets the festive lights it deserves.

Mr Andrew said: "The money that we have raised at the various street party events has been put to improving the Christmas lights around the town, and I hope everyone will notice the difference as we build up the display each year. None of this could have been possible without the fantastic support of all the volunteers who have worked so hard put on this event, and the support from local businesses who have provided sponsorship to help us. I would also like to thank to our local Councillors for the contribution provided from their budget for the lights on the gyratory."
