A Ceilidh, a bake-off and a classic cars show were among the events getting Burley Summer Festival off to a good start.

The festival was officially launched on Saturday morning with a dog show, featuring a range of classes including best rescue, youngest handler, waggiest tail, dog most like its owner, and terrier racing. The event also showcased charities Miss Mollies Dog Rescue, Guide Dogs for the Blind, Hearing Dogs for the Deaf and Linbee Dog Rehoming.

Saturday also saw the start of the Scarecrow Trail with entries from almost 70 businesses, community groups and residents bringing a little nostalgia with a 'Back to the 80s' theme.

Little Ducklings Playgroup put on an impressive spread of home-made cakes in Salem Church Hall to coincide the inaugural Burley Bake-off, and and a performance from the Anchor Big Band in Grange Park. Bake-off judges included Burley Oaks Primary school pupil eight-year-old Annabelle Forster who gave her seal of approval to the event.

She said: "All of the entries were delicious, it was very hard to pick the winners so I had to taste some of them twice. I can't decide if I want to enter myself next year or be a judge again and get to try all the cakes and buns again."

The festival's first day featured two concerts. At the Methodist Church the Wharfedale Chamber Ensemble was led by Burley's Clare Richards and conducted by David Greed, leader of the Orchestra of Opera North. In Burley Social Club, international folk star Charlie Dore entertained with Julian Littman.

The village's four churches joined together on Sunday to stage Praise in the Park. About150 people attended the event which was led by the Minister of Salem United Reformed Church, Reverend Jason McCullagh. The service focused on love and unity in light of recent terrorist attacks, and also celebrated diversity.

On Sunday the festival experienced possibly its largest crowds so far. Attractions included a bigger than ever Classic Vehicle Show with more than 340 exhibits, 30 food and drink stalls, an arts and craft market and vintage fair. The day was rounded off with performances from Silsden Town Band and Burley's Ukulele Jammers.

During the week entertainment has included children's events and daily outings with Walkers are Welcome.

The Festival continues until Bank Holiday Monday when it concludes with the Burley Gardeners' Association Annual Show and displays. The first performance of the Spotty Socks Theatre Company's new touring show, Teechers by John Godber will take place at the Queen's Hall, at 8pm on Friday. The Opera Gala will be held on Saturday evening. The Family Sports event will be held at the Scout and Guide Hut on Sunday afternoon. It will be followed by the final of the Great Burley Bake-off judged by Sandy Docherty, of Great British Bake Off fame. Sandy will also present prizes to the winners of the scarecrow competition.
