MUSIC to suit most tastes is being promised at this year's Burley Summer Festival.

The 2017 event runs from Saturday, August 19 to Sunday, August 27 and will feature everything from opera to gospel.

Its opening night will feature two contrasting concerts - one by award-winning folk star Charlie Dore and the other by Wharfedale Chamber Ensemble.

Conducted by David Greed, orchestra Leader of Opera North, and led by Burley's Clare Richards, the Ensemble will perform at the Methodist Church from 7.30pm.

The programme will include Mendelssohn’s String Symphony No 9 and Dag Wirén's Serenade for Strings, and the orchestra will be joined by Hannah Mackenzie as soloist in Neruda’s Trumpet Concerto in E flat.

Harpist Georgina Wells, meanwhile, will feature in the performance of Vaughan-Williams' 5 Variants on Dives and Lazarus.

Charlie Dore will be joined by singer-songwriter, composer and guitarist Julian Littman - of Steeleye Span fame - when she takes the stage at Burley Social Club at 8.30pm.

The show will feature tracks from her new album, Dark Matter alongside older favourites.

Looking forward to what will be the village's ninth summer festival, Chair Sylvia Tilford said: "We have two musical treats on the first night and we hope there is something in the week to please everybody.

?"Saturday, August 19 also sees the return of the ever popular Burley-in-Woofdale Fun Dog Show, with the Terrier Racing back by popular demand.

"Many of our most popular activities will be happening once more alongside new ones.

"The walks programme offered by Walkers are Welcome has been extended, and in response to demand we again have a ceilidh in the programme.

"And Sunday, August 20 is the big day in the week when the ever popular Burley Classic Show will take place alongside the Craft Fair, the Food and Drinks market and many other events."

Opera will take centre stage on Saturday, August 26 when Soprano Rachel Luxon, Katie Walker (mezzo-soprano), Ivan Sharpe (tenor) and Dean Robinson (bass), with accompanist Annette Saunders, perform.

Opera Gala takes place at the Methodist Church from 7.30pm.

There will also be Music in the Park shows during the first weekend from the Anchor Big Band from Shipley, Silsden Town Band and the Ukulele Jammers, while the Undecided play at Burley Social Club on Monday, August 21.

Choral music will also feature, from the Menston-based Ladies Please Choir who are singing to support the link between Burley and Téréli, in Mali.

And children will get a chance to sing with the Shine Gospel Choir or join djembe drumming workshops.

Churches Together in Burley will also be holding a Burley Praise in the Park event, at 10am on August 20, which is open to all.
