OTLEY residents will be able to order a pint in the Sean Bean - or a glass of wine in the Judi Dench - next year.

The acclaimed actors have emerged as two of the winners of Otley pub Club's Yorkshire Day Celebrities Survey.

The questionnaire asked people to vote for the regional stars, across 11 categories, whose names they would like to see an inn in the town adopt for Yorkshire Day, 2018.

Other winners include former World Champion road cyclist Lizzie Deignan and triathlon stars Alistair and Jonny Brownlee, comedy legend Michael Palin, and Ricky Wilson of Kaiser Chiefs.

The celebrity category, meanwhile, had a joint winner - with retired cricket umpire Dickie Bird and Welcome to Yorkshire Chief Executive Gary Verity receiving the same number of votes.

The 'people's choice' winners have been supplemented by nine other names supplied by the pub club itself, so that there is a celebrity for each inn.

All of the chosen stars will be invited to come to Otley on August 1, 2018 to enjoy a drink in 'their' pub.

First though, there is the small matter of allocating a name to each pub to decide.

Otley Pub Club's Publicity Officer Bob Brook said: "This Yorkshire Day, on Tuesday, August 1 we’ll be in The Black Horse Hotel to make the draw to see which pub gets which celebrity name.

"Then we’ll spend the next 12 months trying to persuade all 21 of them - including both Dickie Bird and Gary Verity, since they tied for first place in the celebrity category - to visit ‘their’ pubs in town on Yorkshire Day, 2018.

"If they can’t come, we’ll be asking for at least an item of memorabilia or a video for Youtube that we can associate with the pub."

He added: "We said we would choose the remaining celebrities to ensure the final list reflects the complete range of individuals, skills and abilities that help to make Yorkshire such a great county.

"They are - poet Ian McMillan, actor Jimi Mistry, actress (and new Doctor Who) Jodie Whittaker, radio and TV presenter Anita Rani, magician Dynamo, boxer Nicola Adams, Paralympians Kadeena Cox and Hannah Cockroft, and singer-songwriter Corinne Bailey Rae."

The other public-vote winners included playwright Alan Bennett, actors John Simm and Angela Griffin and Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker.

The pub club will also present a magnum of French red wine to the winner of a competition it ran alongside the celebrities survey at next week's meeting at The Black Horse.

The prize will go to the person whose choices tallied the most with the overall winners.
