FUNDRAISERS of all ages have taken a bracing dip in the River Wharfe.

It may be summer but the water temperature was decidedly chilly for Alice's Summer Joe Town Memorial River Swim in Otley on Saturday, July 1.

The event was organised by Helen Town as a favour for five-year-old local girl Alice Metcalfe after she missed the annual New Year's Day swim, which Helen helps organise in memory of her father Joe.

It has raised £250 so far, with more sponsorship money still to come in, for Pink Events in support of breast cancer charities.

The children taking part on the day included Alice and her 14 year old sister, Beth and five-year-olds Samwise Bray and Libby Whitehead.

They were joined in the water at Wharfemeadows Park by parents and other family members and supporters.

Alice's mum, Mel, said: "The kids were amazing and so were the adults who went in, they all did an amazing job.

"The water was freezing but they all did it and have raised at least £250 for Pink Events in collections and sponsorship.

"We also had lots of supporters which made the event a great success

"Well done everyone - myself and Alice would like to thank all the sponsors and donors and everyone who took part and came to support.

"Special thanks to Helen Town and to Lara Tyler from Brightwater Swim School."

Samwise's mum Emma Bray, added: "I was so proud of the kids. They took the cold water in there stride and enjoyed it.

"Samwise says his two year old sister can do it next year and he will watch!"

The swim proved such a success that it has now become an annual event and will run again next Summer.
