OTLEY residents were among those who took part in this year's Independence from America Day protest.

The annual demonstration, organised by the Campaign for the Accountability of American Bases, was held outside Menwith Hill on July 4.

About 100 people attended and heard a declaration of 'independence from America' read out, while a letter was handed in to RAF Liaison Officer Geoff Dixon to be passed to the US Chief of Station, Miriam Garrant.

Protesters from Yorkshire, Lancashire, Manchester and even the Far East took part to highlight concerns about the intelligence-gathering station, which is run by the US National Security Agency.

Among the speakers was Maya Evans of Voices for Creative Non-Violence, who spoke about her experiences in Afghanistan working with children affected by war.

The protesters believe military drone strikes in Afghanistan may be planned by staff at bases like Menwith Hill.

Also speaking was CND Chair Dave Webb, who outlined his hopes for nuclear disarmament.

The demonstration featured live music too, from the East Lancs Clarion Choir, Catherine Warr and Bassa Bassa, while Roger Harrington delivered a solo performance about a Leeds soldier who was shot for desertion.
