THE 1ST Burley-in-Wharfedale Guides were 100 years old on May 1 and to celebrate the present Guides and Leaders are holding an afternoon tea party.

Anyone who has any connection with the 1st Burley-in-Wharfedale Guides, are invited to attend the event which will be held on Sunday, July 2 from 2pm to 5pm at the Scout & Guide HQ, Peel Place, Burley-in-Wharfedale.

Sue Vint, Leader 1st Burley-in-Wharfedale Guides said: "What a fantastic achievement that the Guides have run for 100 years without a break. Please can people pass the word on to anyone who has any connection with Burley-in-Wharfedale Guides - we would love them to come celebrate with us on 2nd July. "There will be displays of photographs and memorabilia from the last 100 years."

The Guides originally met on May 1, 1917 in an outbuilding connected with Scalebor hospital. Over the years they have met in several places in Burley - at a purpose built house on Station Road, at the Grange and since about 1980 at the Scout Hut on Peel Place. The Guides have a huge amount of history - forging close links with Lady Baden-Powell, who visited the Burley Company of Guides many times. Princess Mary, The Princess Royal when she was the Guiding President, visited in 1940. The Guides and Rangers made knitted "comforts" which they sent to an "adopted" minesweeper. Princess Mary inspected them and spent the afternoon being entertained with singing and country dancing.
