AN OTLEY granddad and grandson are celebrating 'making the grade' at karate.

Bob Duffisey, 60, and his eight year old grandson Hugo Crowthers both achieved a yellow belt at Otley Karate Centre's recent exam evening.

Joining Bob and Hugo was eight year old Elliot Newell, who earned his red belt - and, in his first grading, achieved the highest marks of the night.

Club instructors John Walker (sixth Dan black belt) and Michael Hofman (second Dan black belt), who train students at the Bridge Church, were pleased with everyone's performance.

They said: "Elliot has worked hard and applied himself diligently since starting his karate lessons with us and this shows in the marks he was awarded for his grading.

"Our classes are tailored for a diverse range of people who may never have even considered that karate training would be for them, but would like to try.

"Bob and Hugo came along to give it a try and so it’s very rewarding to see them successfully passing their grading."

The students were graded by Shihan (master instructor) Ken Gee (ninth Dan black belt), President of the Shukokai-ShitoRyu Karate Alliance, who is one of the highest ranked karate-ka in the UK.
