A TEENAGER has raised more than £1,000 to honour the memory of men who lost their lives in the First World War.

Horsforth School student Ethan Wright swam 89 lengths - one for each of the Horsforth men who lost their lives in the conflict in 1917. The money raised will fund lighting costs for Horsforth Cenotaph.

Ethan, 15, who represented his school at last year's Remembrance Sunday service, thanked everyone who had made donations or supported him.

He also urged his sponsors to attend a Royal British Legion event in Horsforth at 7.15pm on March 20.

"Come along please to the cenotaph lighting switch-on and see what your donations have supported so that we can give even more honour to the brave men who sacrificed their lives for us," he said.

Teacher James Bovington said: "Ethan has shown an outstanding commitment to the whole project remembering the soldiers of WW1 and he is to be commended on the funds raised and the fact that he completed 89 lengths in 51 minutes, one length for each of the 89 Horsforth men who died in 1917. He’s an enthusiastic and determined but modest young man who has greatly exceeded his initial target."

He added: "Ethan also has a special family connection to honour soon in that his great great grandfather’s name will shortly be added to the war memorial in Headingley following a campaign led by his great uncle Graham Wright."
