ILKLEY householders are being urged to check their home security is up to the mark.
Trade body, the Master Locksmiths Association (MLA), issued the plea as it revealed that faulty locks – as well as open windows and insecure doors – figured behind many burglaries.
"Getting into the habit of regularly maintaining your security equipment and double-checking that windows and doors are firmly secured when leaving the house is vital," said spokesman Dr Steffan George.
"There's little more devastating for a family than having their home and personal belongings targeted – and we see it far too often.
"Luckily, making a few small changes can minimise the chances of your home being burgled."
Advice includes to have a professional home security check, by an MLA-approved locksmith; cut back overgrown hedges, bushes and trees to prevent them being used as cover by burglars; lock away garden tools that could be used to break in to a property, and don't hide spare keys under doormats or in other outdoor spots.
