A DISTRICT MP is demanding that the Government rethinks its commitment to overseas aid.
Philip Davies, whose Shipley constituency includes Burley and Menston, said the money should instead be spent at home.
He claimed a commitment to devote 0.7 per cent of gross domestic product to overseas aid led to waste and frivolous spending.
Mr Davies said in the Commons that an example was £1 billion spent each year on consultants.
"When can we get back to some common sense and stop spending more and more on overseas aid every year when the money could be much better spent at home?" he added.
International Development Secretary, Priti Patel, said the aim was to ensure every penny of taxpayers' money went towards helping the world's poorest.
"Overseas development assistance saves and transforms lives," she added.
"Regarding spending on consultants, that is something my department is looking at right now and reviewing."
Mr Davies has previously called for part of the money being spent on overseas aid to be ploughed into adult social care in the UK to help the elderly, vulnerable and disabled.
