THE Lord Mayor of Bradford described the Christmas lights of Burley-in-Wharfedale as among the best in the district at the village’s annual market and switch-on on Saturday.

Cllr Geoff Reid delighted a crowd of more than 2,000 with a ten-second countdown and the push of a plunger to illuminate thousands of multi-coloured lights in dozens of festive forms, put up by the Burley Community Trust.

The switch-on outside Burley Grange took place during the Burley and District Chamber of Trade (BADCOT)’s annual street market, which featured food, gifts and toys as well as children’s rides, a steam engine and a magician.

Families and visitors were also treated to an indoor craft fair, performances from community choirs, a ukulele band and a visit from Father Christmas.

The Lord Mayor, who had switched on Wibsey’s Christmas lights the day before and was due to attend Eccleshill the next day, said later that Burley’s was “one of the most impressive light displays in the district” and added that he was amazed by the end-to-end coverage of the village.
