MEASURES to stop speeding motorists on a Bramhope road are set to be introduced.

Flat top road humps are being proposed for Breary Lane following two speed surveys earlier this year which found mean speeds of just over 24 miles per hour to just over 26 mph.

Leeds City Council is hoping the road humps will keep speed down and will also help pedestrians. It is intended that two of the humps - one near the school and one near the shops - will be used as informal crossing points.

The 20 mph schemes are now an established part of the Leeds City Council’s programme to cut road casualties and promote sustainable travel in residential areas. The council's ultimate aim is to have 20mph limits on the majority of its residential streets by 2020, focussing on schools and the areas around them.

Adel and Wharfedale Councillor Barry Anderson said: "I welcome the introduction of the 20mph zone within the Bramhope area. The majority of residents who have been in touch with me are in favour of the proposals. The route is particularly important for children and their parents going to and from the school as the importance of safety in these circumstances cannot be underestimated. I do however acknowledge the concerns that some residents have expressed, in particular how this is going to be enforced as the police have a number of other priorities in the area and whether or not they will have the time or resources remains to be seen. The Council argue that 20mph zones should be self-enforcing.

Some residents have also asked for this to be extended to other parts of the village and at this stage my advice would be to see if it works in the areas highlighted just now and then argue for it to be extended if it can be proved there are benefits in terms of lower speeds, better quality of life etc. If this proposal saves one life then it is worthwhile. Hopefully it will give confidence to residents and parents to be able to walk safely to school, hence take the pressure of surrounding streets where residents are concerned about the amount of school parking outside their properties.”
