HUNDREDS of people visited Otley's Parish Church over the Heritage Open Days weekend.

All Saints Church opened its doors to visitors from Friday, September 9 to Sunday, September 11.

Those dropping in enjoyed a heritage trail around the inside of the building, a look at 8th Century Saxon Cross pieces and a trip to the bell tower and belfry.

The Parish Church's Bellringers* were on hand to explain and demonstrate the basics of bell-ringing, and also showed the workings of the church clock - built in 1793 and still going strong.

Many of the visitors donated to the Bell Fund which has been set up to raise the £28,000 that is needed to restore the bells - more details can be found at otleybells.uk or on the Otley Bells Facebook page.

The church also gave a talk on the Mysteries of the Monuments on each day, explaining the stories behind many of its wall memorials and their links with local, well-known families.

Otley Conservation Task Force, meanwhile, gave people a rare chance to examine the Navvies Monument on the north side of Church Lane during the weekend and learn about the renovation work it needs.

Otley Courthouse also enjoyed a busy Heritage day on Saturday, September 10 when it gave guided tours and had activities - including cider tasting, apple bobbing and quizzes - based on the theme of Apples and Pears.

The arts centre's building is on the site of an old orchard, and an apple and pear recipe book was also launched on the day.

*The Otley All Saints Bellringers is organising a celebration tea for next Spring for anyone who has rung the church's bells in the past, and their families.

The group is also gathering memories about local bellringing - to find out more see its Facebook page or website or call Meg Morton on 07963 908440.
