WHARFEDALE and Aireborough residents are about to be treated to a free 'annual feast' of heritage events.

This year's Heritage Open Days weekend runs from September 8 to September 11 and the organisers - the event is co-ordinated locally by Leeds Civic Trust - are promising something for everyone.

The weekend will feature everything from history trails and bell ringing to themed walks, photographic exhibitions and a look around a Victorian prison cell.

The local attractions will include a variety of apple and pear themed activities, and fruit and cider tasting, at Otley Courthouse - which is built on the site of an orchard

And in Ilkley visitors will be able to walk around the Calvary - featuring stone carved Stations of the Cross - by Myddelton Lodge and find out about the history of the family who gave the place its name.

Chairman and Heritage Open Days Coordinator for Leeds Civic Trust, Lynda Kitching, said: "Between Thursday, September 8 and Sunday, September 11 volunteer guides, speakers and building owners will welcome us to this festival of heritage, helping us to discover more about our local area.

"There will be 112 events throughout Leeds, with many in the Wharfedale area.

"They will include, in Otley, a fruity theme at the Courthouse and, in the oldest building in the town - namely All Saints Parish Church - there will be tours, views from the bell tower and family history records.

"In Guiseley, meanwhile, there’ll be bell ringing, archives, tours and music at St Oswald’s Church, and a walk around the historic village centre.

"Another walk, The Lost World of a Victorian Asylum, takes in High Royds at Menston and, across the road, the High Royds Memorial Chapel archives will be open along with its peaceful garden.

"Visitors in Ilkley can also learn about the Catholic Middleton family."

Further events include a photograph display, featuring albums packed with shots taken between 1880 and 2016, at Yeadon Town Hall courtesy of Aireborough Historical Society.

And at Otley's Westbourne House - now a Masonic Lodge - there will be a chance to explore the cellars, learn about Freemasonry and see the temple.
