FATHER and son Roger and Max Fielding from Ilkley have taken part in a charity run to raise money for the Martin House Children's Hospice in Boston Spa

Thirteen-year-old Max lives with a rare genetic condition which gives him respiratory challenges, along with long term muscle degeneration and severe learning difficulties. His elder brother Oliver, who also had the same rare genetic condition, died four years ago, just before his 13th birthday.

As a family, the Fieldings spend time together at Martin House. Louis, Roger’s middle son, who has faced particular challenges with his brothers, also loves staying at the hospice, which cares for children and young people with life-limiting illnesses.

The family greatly appreciated their bereavement support following Oliver’s death and continue to benefit from the hospice support and care for Max.

Speaking prior to taking part in the York run Roger said: "I'm doing this run because over the years Martin House has been fabulously supportive of both Oliver and Max, my children; and Louis their brother. They were very supportive when Oliver died, and remain really supportive with Max. And I need to do more exercise anyway!"

More than 5,000 runners took part in the York 10k on Sunday, August 7, with participants attending from across northern and central England.

As part of the event hundreds of youngsters, aged between three and 14, then took part in the free-to-enter York Mini and Junior runs which were started by Max. He and his dad Roger then took part in the 1.5km mini event to support of Martin House Children’s Hospice, with Max very proud to receive a medal to mark his participation.

It is not the first time Roger has raised money for Martin House. Last year he took park in a Strictly Get Dancing competition, raising £5,500 for the hospice.

Martin House Hospice needs in excess of £5.5million each year to provide its services, the majority of which are funded by voluntary donations and fundraising, such as that carried out by the Fielding family.
