ZOE Judkowski notched a gritty victory in the AEGON British Tour yesterday afternoon.

The host club member defeated fellow 17-year-old Stephanie Booth from Newcastle 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 in a

2hr 45min first-round clash in the sunshine on No 1 Court.

The fact that the lasted so long but didn’t involve a tie-break and had a 6-1 final set showed how long some of the games were.

Ilkley Grammar School pupil Judkowski, who is waiting for her A-S Level results in biology, psychology, geography and maths, said: “I came into the tournament with no expectations.

“I just want to play as much as I can over the next few months, try and play as well as I can and see where it takes me.”

Judkowski had the dominant shot with a flat, hard-hit forehand, which eventually overcame Booth’s retrieving ability, although the Ilkley member will need to be more decisive when confronted with a mid-court ball.

It was the second notable victory in as many days for the home club member, who qualified by defeating top seed Tamara Malazonia 6-4, 6-3 on Tuesday.

Judkowski, whose use of the drop shot became increasingly telling against Booth, now meets either eighth seed Olivia Peet – daughter of former Lancashire county player Chris – or lucky loser Gabby Chidwick.

Another success for Ilkley came simultaneously on Centre Court, although it was over much more swiftly.

Isabelle Hearnshaw, doubles partner of Judkowski, beat qualifier Katie Morris 6-1, 6-1.

There wasn’t such good news in the first round of the men’s singles, however, as out-of-sorts third seed Peter Ashley, from Cookridge, was defeated 6-3, 6-1 by Elliott Farmer.

Adding to West Yorkshire interest in the women’s singles though was top seed Serena Nash.

The 18-year-old from Bradford beat Victoria Allen 6-0, 6-1.

The women’s singles final is scheduled for 11am on Saturday, with the men’s singles final to follow at 1pm.

lFormer Woodhouse Grove pupil Naomi Broady notched a shock victory over Monica Puig 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 to advance to the second round of the Rogers Cup.

The tall Briton won 17 of the final 22 points to seal the win, having lost her serve in the opening game of the match.

However, the Stockport woman won a marathon fourth game to level at 2-2, only to drop her serve again in the seventh game on the way to losing the first set.

Broady took a 57-minute second set to level the match before running away with the third set.

However, 26-year-old Broady could not capitalise on her victory, bowing 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 to lucky loser Varvara Lepchenko.

The 30-year-old American was given a first-round walkover by French Open champion Garbine Muguruza.
