A 21-YEAR-OLD Hawksworth woman has been awarded a BA degree from Cambridge University.

Emma Pickersgill studied pre clinical medicine at Peterhouse, which is the oldest and the smallest of the 31 Cambridge University colleges.

Emma and her parents, Richard and Dorothy Pickersgill, enjoyed a champagne and canapes luncheon along with other graduates and their families in the Peterhouse Fellows' Garden before going to the Senate House for the degree ceremony.

Emma's brothers, James and Andrew, watched proceedings from the building's gallery. The family then went punting on the river Cam before having tea and heading home.

Emma went to Hawksworth C of E Primary School and then Guiseley School, where she achieved A* A levels in maths, chemistry, biology and physics. She would encourage anyone who is bright enough to apply to Cambridge. She is particularly glad she chose Peterhouse as her college as it was small and friendly and allowed her to participate enthusiastically in a wide range of inter-college sports, despite having very little natural sporting flair.

Emma will continue her medical studies at St Georges Hospital in London.
