KNITTING enthusiasts in Otley have taken part in a global event.

Members of the town's Knit and Natter groups were in action at the Buttercross on Saturday for World Wide Knit in Public Day.

They proceeded to knit from 10am to 2pm, while watched by large crowds who had turned out to cheer on the Otley Carnival parade.

The World Wide Knit is the largest knitter-run event in the world, and designed to raise the profile of the pastime to encourage more people to take it up.

Otley Knit and Natter member, Karen Weir, said: "One of our members, Jo Briscoe, suggested we should book the Buttercross for the date – especially since it coincided with Otley Carnival, as there would be a lot of people around.

"There were about ten members from our knitting groups who turned out during the day.

"We also had a small stall displaying the flowers we knitted for All Saints Parish Church for its reopening earlier this year.

"We had a lot of people visiting our stall and many were interested in joining our groups.

"We had some knitted flowers for sale, too, and we raised £17 from the sale of a few, which we will donate to Jo Cox's Fund."

The town's three Knit and Natter groups meets at the Courthouse, All Saints Parish Church's cafe and at The Woolpack Studios, in Bondgate, on different days.
